SOUNDHOUSE STUDENT COURSES

SoundHouse offers workshops for students from early years to VCE. These workshops include animation, imagery, video and sound recording and reproduction, as well as a broad range of music creation techniques. All workshops are user-friendly and are instructed by professional teaching staff, allowing students to produce professional products with ease.

music MUSIC
EARLY YEARS STUDENTS MUSIC AND TECHNOLOGY
Duration: 1 hour Suitability: Level 2-3
In this one hour class, explore the magic of music and music technology specifically designed for those in the early years of education. Cover the basic elements of music such as pitch, rhythm and instrumentation and create an original piece of music in an exciting and interactive one hour session.

COMPOSER FOR A DAY - USING SIBELIUS
Duration: Whole day or part day Suitability: Level 5-VCE
Using Sibelius notation software students will learn how to create a musical score, either from scratch or based on scores begun at school. Compositional and instrumentation techniques will be discussed as will principles of notation and efficient use of the software. Students are able to hear and refine their piece as they go, and the session culminates in their piece being printed and an audio recording put onto CD.

DISCOVER MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
Duration: 1 hour Suitability: Level 3-VCE
A hands-on introduction to the latest music technology hardware and software, enabling students to experience a guided exploration of music creation. This session gives students a unique insight into processes used in creating the music they hear every day. Click here for more information

EXTENDED DISCOVER MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
Duration: 1.5 hours Suitability: Level 3-VCE
This extended workshop gives students a greater understanding of music production with the opportunity to further explore MIDI technology, create their own piece of music and have it exported to CD. Students gain a deeper understanding of the composition process and have the option of recording their voice.

ELECTRONIC MUSIC - USING REASON
Duration: Whole day Suitability: Level 5-VCE
An in-depth exploration of contemporary music production techniques using Propellerhead’s Reason software. Reason is a self contained virtual studio within your computer consisting of drum machines, synthesizers, samplers, loop players and effects. Parts can be layered up one at a time and then copied and pasted within the sequencer to build up an arrangement.

FILM SOUNDTRACK CREATOR FOR A DAY - USING ACID
Duration: Whole day or part day Suitability: Level 5-VCE
Using ACID Pro, students will make a silent video file from the SoundHouse library come to life by creating a unique film soundtrack. They will combine sound effects with musical elements to explore the creative process involved in producing a film soundtrack.

MIDI SEQUENCER FOR A DAY - USING SONAR HOMESTUDIO
Duration: Whole day or part day Suitability: Level 5-VCE
Students will be given the opportunity to create an original musical arrangement and develop skills in software based multi track sequencing.

MUSIC PRODUCER FOR A DAY - USING ACID PRO
Duration:
Whole day or part day Suitability: Level 5-VCE
Students will experience the latest trends in music production using professional loop based audio software ACID Pro. Using loops from the extensive SoundHouse loop library, students will create a musical piece in a style of their choice - jazz, rock, hiphop, dance, R’n’B and more.

SOUND STORY CREATOR FOR A DAY - USING ACID PRO
Duration:
Whole day or part day Suitability: Level 3-5
Sound Story Creator is an exciting project that promotes language and literacy to students by bringing a written short story to life. Students write their own story at their school and then read and record it onto a computer. Sound effects such as dogs barking or wind blowing are then added to the recorded narration to take the story into the realm of reality…. or unreality!

science SCIENCE
RECORDING AND REPRODUCING SOUND IN PRACTICE

(Replaces Sounds Fascinating)
Duration: 2.5 hours
Suitability: Year 12 students undertaking ‘Recording and Reproducing Sound’
This extended session covers a broad range of concepts from the VCE Detailed Study 'Recording and Reproducing Sound' but focuses on many aspects which are difficult to effectively demonstrate in a school environment. Students will be given demonstrations and conduct experiments at computer workstations, testing their hearing limits, recording their own voices and using Pasco's Data Studio software to log frequency responses of microphones and speakers. The data will be available for further analysis back at school.

SOUNDS SENSATIONAL
Duration: 1 hour Suitability: Level 5-6
A workshop designed to provide middle school science students with a unique hands-on experience linking basic sound principles to the world of audio recording and music production. Working with the latest in computer sound technology, scientific concepts are applied to areas of student interest such as CD recording and modern music production.

YEAR 11 SOUND STARTER
Duration: 1.25 hours
Suitability: Year 11 students intending to study ‘Recording and Reproducing Sound’ in year 12
A hands-on workshop designed to prepare Year 11 students who will be undertaking the VCE Detailed Study 'Recording and Reproducing Sound' in Year 12. The session has been developed in response to requests from teachers who identified the gap in wave studies and is designed to be undertaken towards the end of Year 11, picking up on the wave aspects considered in Unit 1 in the study of light, as well as aspects of the electricity section of Unit 2. Sound Starter also explores how sound waves are captured with microphones and converted to AC electrical signals. It will provide students with the background to efficiently complete the study in Year 12.

DISCOVER ARTS TECHNOLOGY

Duration: 1 hour Suitability: Level 4-VCE
An exciting introduction to image manipulation and editing techniques. Using Adobe Photoshop, students will create a magazine cover with a photo of themselves, text and background design. They will then go on to explore video editing with Sony Vegas, animating their photo and text whilst chroma keying the image onto a motion background. Photoshop images will be saved and emailed to the class teacher.

EXTENDED DISCOVER ARTS TECHNOLOGY

Duration: 1.5 hours Suitability: Level 4-VCE
This extended workshop gives students a more in depth understanding of arts technology with the opportunity to further explore image manipulation and layering effects using Adobe Photoshop. Students have more time to develop their magazine covers (see Discover Arts Technology course) experiment with video editing and gain a deeper understanding of the processes involved with creating and rendering a video. ADVERTISING EXECUTIVE FOR A DAY - USING VEGAS AND ACID PRO
Duration: Whole day Suitability: Level 6-VCE
Students will create a short advertisement responding to a specific brief using existing footage to create the visual element and creating music to accompany it. Students are encouraged make all the artistic decisions relating to the project’s slogan, visual aesthetic and soundtrack.

VIDEO CLIP PRODUCER FOR A DAY - USING VEGAS
Duration: Whole day or part day Suitability: Level 5-VCE
After choosing an audio track from a wide variety of music beds, students create a video clip to accompany it from the multitude of short pieces of video footage in the SoundHouse library. Students focus their time on artistically developing digital video editing skills to produce their clip which will include text, credits and video effects.
