Richard Gill 2Q & A: Victorian Opera's Music Director, Richard Gill

In just four years, Victorian Opera has established itself as a force to be reckoned with.  One of the company’s greatest achievements is an ability to inspire, engage and enthral audiences.

This month, audiences will be treated to a night of physical and comic delights with The Bear | Angélique showing from 10 - 20 March at the Playhouse.

We spent a few minutes getting to know the Music Director, Richard Gill and discovered what motivates this inimitable and effervescent man behind the 'wand'.

I'm inspired by…
wonderful talent.

My first memory/impression of Melbourne is ...Richard Gill3
Moomba and dust.

My first theatrical experience was …
Singing in the school choir.

The first time I stepped on an Arts Centre stage …
I was amazed at the size of the theatre.

Describe your work/creation/job/role in three words ...
concentrated, intense, satisfying.

My job has taken me to …
new heights of insanity

My motto is …
never be complacent.

When I was a child, I wanted to …
be a ballet dancer.

The hardest thing I’ve ever done was ...
deal with the fact that I'd never be a ballet dancer.

My most treasured possession is ...
my family; all of them.

In the movie of my life, I’d be played by ...
Brad Pitt.

It’s not fashionable, but I love ...
Mars bars.

I often wonder ...
why I do things like this.

If I could time travel, I would go …

to Vienna for the first night of Magic Flute.

My last meal would be …
right before my next one; there's no such thing in my diet.

What question would you most like people to ask you?
How can we have more opera from Victorian Opera in Melbourne?

My favourite item of clothing is ...
my stubbies.

My worst experience is ...
losing my stubbies at the beach.

My greatest achievement is?
Yet to happen.
