Victorian Opera 2010 Season
19 February - 17 July 2010
“There may only be four candles on Victorian Opera’s birthday cake, but that hasn’t stopped it enchanting audiences” The Age
In just four years, Victorian Opera has established itself as a force to be reckoned with. One of the company’s greatest achievements is an ability to inspire, engage and enthral audiences. The 2010 season ahead brings operatic treats for regular attendees as well as those who are new to the art-form. The 2010 season is the year of the woman. Every opera in the season deals with some aspect of the female of the species. The woman betrayed, the woman adored, the woman scorned, the woman as schemer, the woman as conqueror, the woman disconsolate, the woman as winner.
The season begins in February when you can lose yourself in the exhilarating music of Hector Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust at Victorian Opera’s annual concert at Hamer Hall.
In the Playhouse, enjoy a double-bill of William Walton’s The Bear paired with Jacques Ibert’s Angélique, two farces with wild and extreme women at their heart.
Prepare to shift to the edge of your seat with Benjamin Britten’s hauntingly atmospheric, The Turn of the Screw in July.
Victorian Opera also presents a Discover Opera series, where you can gain insights into the season at the Playhouse, with the inimitable and effervescent Richard Gill.
